Chemical Skin Peels
Chemical peels are an accelerated form of exfoliation induced by the use of chemical products.
Many skin problems are due to an excessive build up of dead skin cells, which make the skin thick and dull. A chemical peel removes the outer layers of the skin effectively treating sun damage, hyper pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles, giving a fresher, more youthful appearance.
There are various different types of chemical peels.
During your consultation we will advise you on what types of peel are most suitable to address your condition and how many peels you would require:
A course of 3 peels may be recommended at monthly intervals.
Types of Chemical Peels
There are different types of peels, differing in their intensities.
Superficial Peels
Lighter, milder peels as well as the most popular. The ‘lunchtime peel’ removes the outer layer of cells, lightly exfoliating the skin to give you a healthy glow.
These peels usually use glycolic acid, lactic acid, salycilic acid and maleic acid, and may be used to treat surface area skin problems like sun spots, rough skin, freckles, and treat minor acne (pimples and blackheads). Treatment takes only a few minutes and the skin may be a little red or pinkish like after a mild sunburn.
Medium Peels
Penetrates further into the skin to reduce wrinkles and mild acne scars and to even out skin tone and colour.
Usually contain trichloroacetic acid (TCA). The peel remains on the face for a few minutes before being neutralised. A burning or stinging sensation may be experienced during the application of the peel and the skin may go brown or red in the days after the treatment.
The TCA Skin Peel is designed to be used to combat the most noticeable signs of photo ageing, such as fine lines and dry, uneven skin tone. The TCA Skin Peel can also be used to treat acne and acne scarring.
OBAGI Blue Peels
This is the leading TCA skin peel treatment. Mixed with a special blue base the Obagi Blue Peel allows the Practitioner to regulate the depth of the peel and remove surface layers of aged and damaged skin. These dead cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface.
Following the procedure, you will experience light swelling and your skin will begin to peel within 2 to 3 days. The peeling will continue over the next several days and should be healed in an average of 7 to 10 days. When your skin has completely finished peeling, you will immediately notice the dramatic results of your enhanced complexion. Your skin's appearance will continue to improve for the next 4 to 6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and more youthful looking.
